NICE TO MEET YOU
I'm Dr. Michele Sare
Armed with my doctorate degree, a Harvard certificate in education, 8 years in quality assurance, and with 25 years of experience in formal education in several countries, I thought it would be an easy transition to start an online course creation business to sell learning products in the creator economy.
But it didn't take long for me to see the gaps and false promises - great for marketing - terrible for learning. I put my quality assurance and educator's hats back on and built the tools to assess my misery - and the extremely poor results customers of the creator economy get. I watched the cascading of low trust and declining sales - a logical and obvious consequence of course products that are built on marketing, not on principles. It is time to honestly professionalize the products sold to help others learn something new or better: The path forward is with Professional Learning Products (TM)
Why This, Why Me?
Education started out begin fun and easy for me – but then in 4th grade – an episode of thinking I could fly like Superman – landed me face-first in a collision with a hearty brick wall. The fractured skull left me with some gaps in memory and some learning challenges. I was put in some - what we referred to then as – dumbbell classes. Adding a few family episodes that ‘put me in my place’ – I linked up that learning was hard, hard work, I wasn’t worthy, and only for smart ones.
When I achieved 1400 + scores on my SAT exams for college placement, I went to the school counselor and told her there must be some mistake; funny how we can link up things – make assumptions – and hold ourselves back – often because of other’s perceptions, labels, or our own assumptions.
I lead with this because – in so many ways – the Expert-Creator Economy makes the very same assumptions about our customers: They’re too busy to learn. Their attention span is too short, they aren’t disciplined learners, they just want bite-sized easy to digest content, and other ridiculous assumptions that drive how courses are created in the creator economy. We disrespect of customers as capable learners.
Add this set of beliefs to the great dabbling with principles of quality and education and – ‘poof’ – thousands of creators producing a bunch of information products - and what we call in formal education - ‘brain dumps.’ Then, just to add insult to injury – promote the notion that ‘anyone can teach’ – ‘just create a framework and share it and you’ll make a fortune’ - and it becomes glaringly obvious that the failings of a quick-fix approach will eventually be revealed ….
Today, we’re blaming AI for the ‘slop’ and adding more features as a way to address low industry trust and declining sales. But we can’t blame AI – it was trained on the creator economy to behave like the creator economy and to keep its users happy. AI is just revealing and magnifying gaps that already existed.
We need a better assessment and diagnosis of the problem. We need Professional Learning Products™ - leading Business Next! in the Expert-Creator Economy!
Why I Do It
Education has saved my life in more ways and in more times than I can calculate. Getting my 1st degree as an ADN and becoming an RN at 21 – gave me a livelihood and financial independence. A bachelor’s degree at 23 opened more doors and job opportunities. A master degree enabled my career as a teaching professor and the doctorate became an invitation to a whole new level of understanding and opportunity.
Because of education, I was pretty useful at the epicenter of the largest complex humanitarian emergency the Americas has ever known. Education helped me to teach in several countries and partner with leading global health organizations. Education has helped me to guide hundreds of people who were cast to inequity and poverty to find paths to their own success.
Education that was born in self-improvement and personal development has saved my life in another way; after abuse, betrayal, and needing to fully rebuild my life I found a way to heal and thrive. Study, reflection, and understanding helped me survive the loss of my brother and to help many others through grief and loss.
You see, I know what a very big deal it is – what a sacred promise we embark upon – when we presume to influence the attitudes, beliefs, behaviors, thinking, skills, and knowledge of others. It isn’t OK to mess with people’s hopes and dreams. I’ve wasted too much time and money on inflated promises, made-up frameworks, and poorly designed and delivered ‘courses’ here in the creator economy.
AI is magnifying our industry gaps. How we respond will set the future; more of the same? Or more accurate problem-solving that leads to evidence-based solutions? This is where I stand. The evidence-based solution is Professional Learning Products™ … Quality is the only way forward to honor our promise to our customers …
(Like you, I have personal reasons, too: I want to do more farming, leave a legacy for my family, & help more people succeed on their own terms ... & I want to move that log building you can see and fix it up!)
